Conceptualizing & Capturing Energy is the title of my ongoing project to understand and document diverse definitions of energy across societies. Many of us use or hear the word “energy” on a daily basis, but how many of us can put words to its meaning? Many people associate energy with Einstein’s equation of E=mc², but few know that “energy” was once a term to designate aggressive speech or action in a social context. Since then, the word’s meaning has diverged to accommodate diverse groups of people across the planet. This project works provides a cross-cultural exploration of energy in just a few of its expressions; from nuclear energy technology to ancestral Polynesian energy.
